Family Downtime

While we are here for you to purchase clothing from, we also are here for support. The intent of this post is to support mothers.

Many kids will be out of school the next few weeks due to corona virus uncertainty. Mothers are not sure of the best way to keep everyone happy while being somewhat quarantined. As a mother that has homeschooled and been with my children daily, I feel somewhat equipped and would like to share some of the things that we enjoy doing together.

Let me start with saying, It is okay for them to be bored. Many times out of boredom comes much creativity. I like to plan my day the night before in 30 minute increments. If they are really into one activity, such as building with legos, its okay to not move on until they are ready. The list is ideas from youngest to oldest:

  • sensory bins
  • craft jar w scissors, paper, crayons, etc.
  • play doh and cookie cutters
  • take a walk
  • practice letters (print/cursive)
  • scavenger hunt
  • write a story w/ illustrations
  • read the story aloud to your family
  • play outside
  • read 30 minutes daily
  • practice your hobby or sport
  • have a picnic lunch
  • write an encouraging letter
  • Get to know your neighbor(maybe no hugs though)

Do some of these things with your children. They will love it and you will make great memories. Be sure to carve out quite time daily so that you can catch your breath. The years that we homeschooled, my children would spend an hour every evening in their rooms. From that quite time, I learned that my son is an artist, my daughter would write me the sweetest letters and I would rest and prepare for dinner. Remember, it is okay for them to be bored. You may find that this down time is just what your family needs.

Once you are finished, feel free to sit on your couch with a cup of hot tea and shop with us at Pine+Sapling!
